We’re building in public: Our journey from MVP to becoming a profitable bootstrapped startup

Founder

We've decided to draw back the curtain, revealing not just our first product but also the insides of the company we’re trying to build in the process.

Why?

Reason 1: We're building something cool, and we want people to be in on the action.

Reason 2: Keeping everything open establishes a social contract of sorts with our customers and readers - this will not just help us get the critical feedback we need, it’ll also help us build trust and transparency in our relationship with our customers.

Reason 3: In our own way, we aspire to inspire the next generation of founders embarking on the journey of bootstrapping their companies.

How we’ll be doing this

Transparency means discussing the product from day 1, not waiting until you reach the product-market-fit with $500k MRR. It involves sharing both the strategies and the screw-ups, not just highlighting the successes. Our goal is not to create the illusion of perfection but to present the most genuine and realistic picture possible. Here’s how we intend to do it -

  1. We’ll make all our metrics public - traffic on the website, number of registered users (paying and non-paying), growth, churn, etc.
  2. We’ll share our finances (salaries, server expenses, admin costs, etc.)
  3. We’ll talk about our strategies, processes, and culture.

What's Coming Up

  1. We’re putting together a public dashboard for the user and website metrics
  2. In the upcoming weeks, we'll be sharing insights into our internal processes through a series of posts and, hopefully, videos. These will cover a range of topics, including how we conduct meetings, manage hiring, facilitate learning and development, and handle feedback.
  3. We’ll start coming up with quarterly posts summarising everything that went well and everything that did not.
